Deer Lake RCMP have arrested a 42-year-old woman and seized a quantity of cocaine. It happened at a traffic stop Monday afternoon on Middle Road in the town. Police noticed suspected cocaine inside the vehicle, more than an ounce, as well as drug trafficking items. The woman is set to appear in court at a later date and the investigation is continuing. Cpl Jolene Garland says “Recent street level seizures of cocaine by RCMP NL show purity levels between 94-96%.” This purity is highly toxic for human consumption and can easily result in death to the user. Cocaine is currently the leading cause of overdose deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Furthermore, Garland says if you suspect someone is overdosing on cocaine, immediately seek medical attention. Naloxone is ineffective in combating cocaine overdose. Nearly half of the 158 overdose deaths from 2023-24, were attributed solely to cocaine.
