It’s common to hear people say, I hope you’re sitting down, before they tell you something. That’s exactly what Dave Elms of Corner Brook remembers when he got a phone call from a lady asking if he could speak with the Premier about a month ago. He was told he had been selected to be inducted into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador. Elms says he’s glad he was sitting down because it took the air right out of him. Elms is one of seven people to be invested into the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador and is being recognized for Volunteerism. Elms first joined Corner Brook Winter Carnival in 1993 and has been the mascot of Leif the Lucky for thirty years. He also dedicates time to the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life and is also on the board of the Janeway Children;’s Hospital Foundation. On October 4th, Government House will see seven people named in what will be the 16th investiture ceremony. Since the first appointments were made in 2004, the total number of recipients is 142.
