Inspector Amy Sharpe says this two-member team is specially trained to investigate serious traffic-related offences. This includes dangerous and impaired driving, multi-vehicle collisions, and breaches of the Highway Traffic Act.
The RNC held a traffic safety checkpoint on the north shore of the Bay of Islands this morning as the launch for a new full-time dedicated traffic unit in western Newfoundland. Last year, the Corner Brook RNC expanded its jurisdiction to include the Bay of Islands, Pasadena, and Massey Drive. Inspector Amy Sharpe says this two-member team is specially trained to investigate serious traffic-related offences. This includes dangerous and impaired driving, multi-vehicle collisions, and breaches of the Highway Traffic Act.
Sharpe says a larger geographic area means a lot more accidents and investigations that involve motor vehicles. Today’s unit launch was timely given Tuesday’s winter blast that hit the west coast, with a lot of snow accumulating in a short time which caught a lot of people off guard and unprepared.
Sharpe says motorists on the west coast can expect to see an increase in police presence with more traffic stops, providing more education, answering questions and issuing tickets or laying charges.
