The City of Corner Brook is looking to change coin operated parking meters to cashless, pay-by-plate parking systems. Todd Flynn is the city’s Director of Protective Services. He says there are 150 parking meters in the downtown area and over the past year, many of them have been destroyed in an attempt to get the money out. Flynn says they need to maintain a parking service in the downtown area which has limited parking and some tend to stay in free parking for long durations, which has a negative affect on businesses.
One parking station can manage upwards of ten vehicles or spaces and Flynn says the cost will be cheaper than replacing the current coin meters. He says the city of St. John’s has been doing this for nearly a decade now and was the mentor in this decision. He says they did a study on this back in 2016 and the information was used to validate their decision.
Flynn says while the RNC did lay charges in connection with the vandalized parking meters, those people were back out on the streets within hours and more meters were gone the next day.
