With limited downtown parking, Mayor Jim Parsons says the goal is to enhance the movement of vehicles in and out of the metered parking spaces to aid with the availability of parking spaces for downtown shoppers.

Corner Brook motorists will have to pay more for parking in the new year. At Monday night’s meeting, council decided to double the cost from 1$ to $2 for two hours of parking. Mayor Jim Parsons says these parking meters are becoming obsolete and costs more to maintain and replace, if possible. He says there is also a Hotspot app on phones where people can pay for parking by phone. With limited downtown parking, Parsons says the goal is to enhance the movement of vehicles in and out of the metered parking spaces to aid with the availability of parking spaces for downtown shoppers. The parking rate increase is also two-fold in that while it may generate more parking revenue, it will also double the cost for extended metered parking use. Parsons says the purpose is to enhance the movement of vehicles in the downtown area. To date, the City has received two emails that comment against the parking rate increase.
