Jim Parsons says one contract did not go through, but last year a contract was awarded for 6 units which is a good start, but there’s 24 units left and he’s not sure if 50 units would cover off the huge waitlist at NLHC.
Government has awarded a contract worth $9.8M to Streamline Management, based in Pasadena, to build a 20-home apartment complex in Corner Brook. The three-story apartment building located on Crestview Avenue will be owned and operated by Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. It will feature 10 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom apartments.
Meanwhile, Corner Brook MHA Jim Parsons says in the spring of 2024, government committed to build 50 units in the Crestview Avenue area to replace run down units. Parsons says one contract did not go through, but last year a contract was awarded for 6 units which is a good start, but there’s 24 units left and he’s not sure if 50 units would cover off the huge waitlist at NLHC.
Last week, government announced a $10M Kenmount Crossing Acure Health Care Campus, a mid size theatre, and the Sports and Wellness Dome in St. John’s are projects that have been scrapped, given the province’s fiscal situation.
Parsons says these projects have to get done and NLHC must provide social housing, and this is something he will be holding them to account on, and something he didn’t shy away on when he was Mayor.
Four of the two-bedroom apartments will be fully accessible, while all 20 will feature universal design components to support people as they age. The building will also include an elevator. Construction should start this summer and be complete by the end of next year.
