All of city council sat down on Friday for a meeting with the Manager of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, and Kruger VP Darren Pelley. The mill has been shut down due to unprecedented low levels of water at the Grand Lake Reservoir, which impacts Deer Lake Power’s ability to supply the mill. On Bayfm with Lenny Benoit, Mayor Linda Chaisson says the mill’s future was their biggest concern and Councillor Donna Luther says it’s easier to understand the shut down after the meeting. The mill has plans for a $700 million dollar retrofit to be able to manufacture other products besides newsprint and they will also construct a wind farm for electricity production. Chaisson says she’s confident about their plans and council has been assured there is money there for this diversification. Meanwhile, Luther says they walked away saying these guys know what they’re doing and they are here for the city.
