Jamie Fowlow says a clinic in Corner Brook pays a combined property and business tax of 47 mils. In 2013 St. John’s got rid of business tax in favour of a slightly higher commercial property tax, so businesses pay one tax across the board of 29.5 mils.
A medical facility building owner in Corner Brook says businesses here are paying taxes at between 16.75 mils from the smallest to banks that are paying a rate of 140 mils, or 14 percent of the property value every year. Jamie Fowlow purchased a building last year, which is known as the Veitch Medical clinic on O’Connell Drive. He says his tax bill is at 34 mils and that’s hard when trying to recruit medical professionals. Fowlow says many health care professionals are MCP billers, which is a flat rate so to increase revenue, hours have to go up and wages go down. He says it’s time to follow St. John’s and get rid of this archaic way of billing. The mill rate for residential property owners is 8 mills, which is slightly less than one percent of the assessed value of the home. Fowlow says our business community should be taxed equally and many owners aren’t aware of the different rates.
