The city of Corner Brook has renewed a water agreement that will cover the next ten years with the community of Mount Moriah. The current agreement is set to expire July 31st. At Monday’s public meeting, Councillor Charles Pender explains how those Bay of Islands residents will have to pay more for sewer. Mt. Moriah will be charged the same Water and Sewer Levy as Corner Brook residents, excluding the sewer portion, as follows: Residential Units: $570 (previously $455 in 2016) Commercial Units: $680 (previously $535 in 2016) Rates may be adjusted at Council’s discretion during the budget process.
Pender says usage restrictions are also in place in order to reduce water consumption and excessive usage. Daily usage cap: 600 litres/day per residential or commercial unit Excess usage charge: $0.583 per 1,000 litres (up from $0.386 in 2016) The rate will be revised yearly by either the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or a rate determined by Water and Sewer staff—whichever is greater
The water agreement with Mt. Moriah is due to take effect August 1st but City Manager Darren Charters says they haven’t heard back from the town yet. Requests for an interview with someone from Mt Moriah has not been returned. In the end, council approved Corner Brook’s part in the agreement.
