Construction of a cableway is nearing completion at the site of a grounded cargo ship in Lark Harbour. The MSC Baltic III ran aground in Cedar Cove in February after losing power. The company contracted “T and T Salvage” to handle the cleanup, which is being overseen by the Canadian Coast Guard. Bruce English says the contractor’s main focus now is getting a cableway working, something he says is similar to the ski lifts at Marble Mountain. He says this will not mean 100 percent access since it depends on weather conditions but it will definitely improve daily access to the vessel so winterization can take place. English says 4 out of 6 identified tanks onboard had to be flushed clean and the oily water mixture was transported into Corner Brook on Sunday and it sits with 100 cubic meters of this waste to be discharged to trucks. He says 407 containers have been removed from the ship and 65 containers remain onboard, most of which have been in contact with water making them too heavy to lift with the crane. As well, some contain food products that are giving off H2S gas. English says air quality is being monitored frequently.
