As of 10:30 p.m. the TCH has reopened in both directions.
UPDATE: RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador is assisting The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) in response to an aircraft crash near Deer Lake. The Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) remains closed in both directions in the area of the Deer Lake Airport. There is currently no risk to public safety.
EARLIER STORY: A small plane has crashed near the Deer Lake Regional Airport, officials say.The aircraft is operated owned by Kisik Aerial Survey Inc and is a Piper Navajo C - a small twin engine aircraft.
The aircraft took off from Deer Lake airport at 5:27 p.m. and crashed 3 minutes later outside airport property, according to Tammy Priddle, CEO of the Deer Lake Regional Airport Authority. Priddle said despite the situation, flights at the airport are not impacted.
First responders from the airport's emergency team along with Deer Lake Fire Department, RCMP and NLHS are on the scene. Airport management have also been in touch with Transport Canada and the Transportation Safety Board. The RCMP currently have control of the scene.
The TCH near is closed in both directions near Airport Road due to the situation.
