Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne says funding will be used to capitalize on the natural competitive advantage that is found in western NL.

The CEO of the Trans Canada Trail is impressed with the number of volunteers within the West Coast Cycling Association with over 200 members. Mathieu Roy was in Corner Brook last week for an announcement on funding for the association. Slightly less than  $782K will go towards the expansion of their mountain-biking network and to drive economic development. Roy says the Trans Canada Trail is about 29,000 kms across the country which also tie into other trails. He says the trail includes 1,300 kms across the province with the East Coast trail , the NL Trailway and the Corner Brook connector. Roy says cycling really increased during the pandemic and levels have not decreased. He says the big project here is the Great Coastal Trail on the Northern Peninsula, which will add another 850 kms of trail when completed.

Corner Brook MHA Gerry Byrne announced the funding. He says the money will be used to capitalize on the natural competitive advantage that is found in western NL. Byrne says mountain biking is a sport but it is also a driver of visitation. Support from this three-year investment is from the federal-provincial Labour Market Development Agreement. It includes two full time positions with the West Coast Cycling Association.
