Lynn Howse says 867 new items were searched, there were 152 new visitors to the Waste Wizard App, and 23 new searches added to the list.
According to numbers from the Western Regional Waste Management team, 50 more tonnes of waste was recycled last month compared to January of 2025. On Bayfm’s Trash Talk with Lenny Benoit, guest Lynn Howse says last month, 160 tonnes of material was recycled. She says 867 new items were searched, there were 152 new visitors to the Waste Wizard App, and 23 new searches added to the list meaning 160 tonnes of material was recycled during January in the western zone.
Howse says they have what is termed as “residuals” which is all the contamination that gets thrown into a recycling bin. She says numbers are down ten percent month over month last year, meaning people are paying attention to what goes in the blue bag.
Howse says every item that goes in a blue bag or a clear bag, makes a difference with less waste going into the landfill. She says landfills last longer and less garbage gets trucked to Grand Falls-Windsor. Howse says this means tipping fees are the same as they have been since the start.
