Food First NL has selected 13 rural retailers with the goal of improving access to food and one of them is on the west coast. It’s phase two of their Great Things in Store program and Heatherton Convenience in Bay St. George has signed on. Alison Bennett-James is the Program Coordinator and says in Phase 1, they partnered with six retailers to pilot projects like home delivery, online shopping, and custom portion sizes. She -James says they received a huge amount of interest from retailers and those selected will have access to funding, support, and a network of advisors to help with their project. Each retailer will co-host a community meeting with Food First NL to hear from residents. These meetings will begin this Fall and continue into 2027.
