As students head back to class today, the RNC will be adding extra patrols in school zones. Cst Stephanie Myers says with thousands of children returning to school there will be a significant increase in traffic, especially during the morning commute.. She says it is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped with its stop sign out and lights flashing and penalties are six demerit points with up to $1,200 in fines.
Myers says it’s an exciting time of year, and some students may be distracted so drivers are reminded to pay extra attention near intersections, crosswalks, and in parking lots. In a school zone, fines for speeding are doubled.
Motorists should never use cellphones while driving.
