Earlier this month, 20 members of Qalipu First Nation gathered in Bishops Falls for a Mi’kmaw On-the-Land Seniors Retreat.” Starting today, there’s another one taking place in Robinsons at the Pirates Haven. On Bayfm’s “Qalipu Today” Cultural Wellness Facilitator, Kaylee Sullivan said one thing they focus on is something they start every day with, smudging and drumming. She says crafting, language, and ceremonies is another big part of it.
Sullivan says before applying for funding to host these retreats, they surveyed senior members, something she says led to the creation of their Seniors Advisory Committee. She says they named the retreat “Muiwalu’kik,” which means “we honour them.”
Registration for both camps was overwhelming and had a waitlist. Sullivan says part of this program will include a similar online event coming in late November and details are being finalized.
