The February 4th show of Qalipu Today was postponed due to weather. The show will aired Tuesday, February 11. The Corner Brook Aboriginal Women’s Association hosted their 18th annual Apuknajit Winter Feast earlier this month. The feast is a time to come together as a community to mark the February moon, the snow blinding moon. During the heart of winter, it is a time for sharing, giving thanks and asking the creator for continued safety. Guest Sherry Dean spoke more about this tradition and the feast.

American Eel was listed as a species of special concern in 2006 and became a threatened species in 2012. It is currently listed under the vulnerable category on the NL Endangered Species Act. The Environment and Natural Resources Department of Qalipu First Nation have recently begun a new study on America Eel. This study aims to set up permanent sample plots in Muddy Hole, Flat Bay. These samples will help to establish a long-term temporal abundance study to look at population numbers and health, which will inform conservation efforts for the American Eel. The gatherings focused on hunting practices, Mi’kmaw legends and storytelling as it relates to the land.
